RESIDENTS MUST CLEAN SEWER EASEMENT
TREE ROOTS HAVE ENVELOPED AND PENETRATED SEWER PIPE, FORCING THE REPLACEMENT OF 500 FEET OF THE LINE
By ANNE PICKERING, Staff Writer
WEST CHESTER — Four West Goshen residents in the Kirby Woods subdivision will have to do a little yard work to clean off a West Chester sewer easement in their backyards.
The borough needs to replace about 500 feet of an old sewer line that is in poor condition.
One resident will have to remove some sections of a fence. Two others will have to move or lose some landscaping. Two of the homes will lose about 10 large trees that formed woods at the back of their properties.
Roots from the trees have enveloped and penetrated the old terra cotta clay sewer pipe and what was once a 12-inch-diameter pipe is now more like a 6-inch-diameter pipe, said Bob Wilpizeski, director of the West Chester Department of Public Works. The residents are cooperating, although “a couple residents have expressed disappointment.”

KESSLER WANTS ANOTHER TERM
Throws hat in with organic farming
By Matthew Reichl, Special to The Mercury
State Rep. David Kessler said property tax and preserving farm land are two of the most important issues he will focus on if he is re-elected this year.
"That was what i focused on when I was originally campaigning," he said.
Elected in 2006, Kessler has spent years as an Oley Township supervisor and kept the position when he joined the state House of Representatives, to the anger of some who felt he was spreading himself too thin.
"By staying as a township supervisor, it has kept me in close touch with the needs of townships and boroughs and I've introduced two bills that will tremendously help throughout," he said. "As far as time is concerned, the majority of township supervisors have a full-time job. Oley Township is a very quiet township because we have lots of preserved farmlands."
